Serious coffee lovers around the country know La Colombe for its gourmet roasted coffee, which appears in top-quality restaurants from coast to coast. Its founders, Todd Carmichael and Jean Philippe Iberti, opened their first cafe in Philadelphia in the mid-1990s and established a bustling wholesale business shortly thereafter. Their latest initiative is a series of upscale coffee cafes, now in four cities and expanding every year.
The DC location, in the charming Shaw neighborhood, has already garnered a reputation for its high quality pour-over and espresso coffees and a stylish, modern decor. Some of La Colombe's signature drinks include the draft latte (cold-pressed coffee and frothed milk available on tap), as well as the rotating selection of single-origin and custom-blend coffees. You can even register for a coffee class and learn to make your own best brew.
Be aware: La Colombe can be crowded at peak times, and there’s no Wi-Fi, so come with a newspaper or strike up a conversation with some friends from Yale West.
