The National Air and Space Museum is one of DC’s most popular tourist attractions. Its latest exhibit, "Artist Soldiers: Artistic Expression in the First World War”, will be open to visitors until Veterans Day 2018.
The exhibit is divided into two parts. The first, “Artist Soldiers,” tells the hidden history of professional artists recruited by the army to chronicle the battlefield. The second part of the exhibit, “Soldier Artists,” focuses on the creative expression of the ordinary soldiers in the European theater during the Great War. A collaboration between the Air & Space Museum and Museum of American History, this unique exhibit features works of fine art as well as historical artifacts that together offer a new perspective on one of history’s most important, and most traumatic, conflicts.
