Celebrate the Mexican custom of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, with celebrations throughout the DC area. The day of remembrance for loved ones who have passed away traditionally starts at midnight on Halloween and continues into the following day.
In addition to many Mexican restaurants offering food and drink specials, you can also visit the National Museum of the American Indian October 30 through November 1 for family-friendly performances and culinary demonstrations. Or, mark your calendar for November 4 to join the Embassy of Mexico at the Mexican Cultural Center on 16th Street for a jam-packed fiesta from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. Enjoy mariachi music, Mexican food, a dance presentation, art, films, and more. The Smithsonian’s website will also be participating in Day of the Dead festivities with a celebratory offering to late Mexican singers and artists.
